Sonja Dümpelmann

Sonja Dümpelmann is a landscape historian and chair of environmental humanities at the University of Münich.

Sonja is the author or editor of several books, including Landscapes for Sport: Histories of Physical Exercise, Sport, and Health (Dumbarton Oaks, 2022) and the award-winning Seeing Trees: A History of Street Trees in New York City and Berlin (Yale University Press, 2019). She lectures internationally, and has served as president of the Landscape History Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians and as senior fellow in Garden and Landscape Studies at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C. In 2020-21, she was a fellow at the Berlin Institute for Advanced Study.
