Sara Jensen Carr

Sara Jensen Carr is an associate professor of architecture, urbanism, and landscape at Northeastern University, where she holds affiliate appointments at the Global Resilience Institute and Institute for Health Equity and Social Justice Research.

Previously, she held a joint appointment at the School of Architecture and Office of Public Health Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. She is a licensed architect and has practiced professionally in the Bay Area, New Orleans, and across the Gulf South.

Her work on the connections between urban landscape, human health, and social equity has been recognized by the Graham Foundation, Mellon Foundation, and National Science Foundation, and has been published in Places Journal, Preventive Medicine, LA+, The Avery Review, and Hawai‘i Journal of Medicine and Public Health, among others. She is the co-founding editor of the ASLA award-winning GROUNDUP, the journal of the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at the University of California, Berkeley. Her first book, The Topography of Wellness: How Health and Disease Shaped the American Landscape, was published by University of Virginia Press in 2021.

Carr was the recipient of the inaugural Oregon | Places Prize, which supports public scholarship on the theme of “place and power.”
