Jeffrey Hou
Jeffrey Hou is Provost’s Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Architecture at the National University of Singapore, where he co-directs the Civic Resilience Lab.
His work focuses on engaging marginalized communities and citizens through community design, design activism, and cross-cultural learning. Recent publications include Emerging Civic Urbanisms in Asia: Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore, and Taipei Beyond Developmental Urbanization (2022) and Guerrilla Urbanism, a special issue of Urban Design International (2020). Hou is also the co-editor of City Unsilenced: Urban Resistance and Public Space in the Age of Shrinking Democracy (2017) and Messy Urbanism: Understanding the “Other” Cities of Asia (2016). His collaborative publications, Design as Democracy: Techniques for Collective Creativity (2017), Insurgent Public Space: Guerrilla Urbanism and the Remaking of Contemporary Cities (2010), and Greening Cities, Growing Communities: Learning from Urban Community Gardens in Seattle (2009), received the Great Places Book Award from the Environmental Design Research Association in 2018, 2012, and 2010.
