Justus Nieland
Justus Nieland is Professor and Chairperson of the Department of English at Michigan State University, and he teaches in the Film Studies Program. He specializes in modernism and film history, and his current research interests include infrastructure, experimental and industrial film, and midcentury design and architecture history. He is working on a manuscript titled “Container Culture,” a study of modernist design, packaging, and industrial film; and he is thinking a lot about cardboard, logistics, and the Container Corporation of America.
He is the author of four books: Happiness by Design: Modernism and Media in the Eames Era (University of Minnesota Press, 2020); David Lynch (University of Illinois Press, 2012); Film Noir: Hard-Boiled Modernities and the Cultures of Globalization, with Jen Fay (Routledge, 2009); and Feeling Modern: The Eccentricities of Public Life (University of Illinois Press, 2008).
