Mariana Griswold Van Rensselaer

Mariana Griswold Van Rensselaer (1851–1934) was one of the first architecture critics in America. 

Starting in the 1880s, she contributed many articles to leading periodicals of her day, including The Century Magazine and American Architect and Building News, and wrote several books, including Henry Hobson Richardson and His Works, Englich Cathedrals, and  Art Out-of-Doors. Along with Montgomery Schuyler, she is considered one of the founders of the critical tradition in American architecture. An anthology of her writings, Accents as Well as Broad Effects: Writings on Architecture, Landscape, and the Environment, 1876–1925, was published by the University of California Press in 1996.
