Mark Ruwedel is an artist/photographer based in Long Beach, California.
Ruwedel received his M.F.A. from Concordia University in Montreal and is currently a professor at California State University. He is the recipient of major grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. His work has been published and exhibited at the Tate Modern, Los Angeles County Art Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Yale Art Gallery, National Gallery of Art, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others. His monographs include Written on the Land and Westward the Course of Empire.
Ruwedel has been photographing in the American deserts and other remote locations for 25 years now, pursuing epic-scaled projects on railroad construction, pre-Columbian sites, the landscapes of nuclear weapons, and, more recently, failed attempts to live in the harsh environment of the desert.
