Sonja Dümpelmann

Sonja Dümpelmann is a landscape historian and professor at the University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design.

She is the author or editor of several books, most recently Landscapes for Sport: Histories of Physical Exercise, Sport, and Health (Dumbarton Oaks, 2022) and the prizewinning Seeing Trees: A History of Street Trees in New York City and Berlin (Yale University Press, 2019). She lectures internationally, and has served as president of the Landscape History Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians and as senior fellow in Garden and Landscape Studies at the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection in Washington. She was a 2020-21 fellow at the Berlin Institute for Advanced Study.
