Places seeks an Assistant Editor who will play a key part in shaping the journal’s public presence, deepening and expanding audience engagement, helping to manage diverse institutional collaborations, and supporting multiple editorial projects. This crucial role bridges editorial and communications responsibilities, and provides significant opportunities for growth to an energetic, detail-oriented person keenly interested in ambitious longform journalism and public scholarship on the built environment.

As part of a small and highly collegial team, the Assistant Editor will craft and implement the journal’s communications strategies; build readership via targeted email campaigns; manage our social media channels; curate our Reading Lists channel; edit Places Wire and Places News; organize online and in-person events; and assist the editors in stewarding our network of academic partners.

The ideal candidate will have a very strong understanding of internet culture and social media, superb writing skills, and a perfectionist’s eye for detail. They will benefit from experience in some combination of online publishing, social media management, and academic environments; they will be skilled in many of the following areas and willing to learn the rest: content management systems and HTML (WordPress), Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office, MailChimp, Google Workspace, and Google Analytics. Excellent organizational and time management skills are essential. Interest in the design disciplines and academic publishing is desirable but not obligatory. The person we want is a quick study, a passionate reader, and a nimble collaborative thinker.

This is a full-time staff position with benefits; compensation will be in the range of $55,000 to $65,000, depending on experience. You will work from home but participate in weekly in-person meetings in San Francisco (subject to pandemic restrictions).

Places is committed to diversity and welcomes people from all backgrounds to apply.
