Places seeks a Public Engagement Editor who will play a key role in shaping the journal’s public presence and strengthening our engagement with readers, authors, project collaborators, institutional partners, and other colleagues and supporters around the world. This crucial role bridges communications and editorial responsibilities, and provides significant opportunities for advancement to an energetic, detail-oriented person keenly interested in ambitious longform journalism and public scholarship on the built environment.

Reporting to the Editor/Executive Director, the Public Engagement Editor will craft and implement the journal’s communications strategies; manage our social media channels; develop and manage collaborative projects; write our newsletter; organize in-person and online events; curate our Reading Lists channel; edit Places Wire and Places News; build readership via targeted email campaigns; and help steward our global network of university partners.

Strong candidates will have at least two years’ experience in online publishing and social media management, ideally for accounts with sizable followings. They will possess superb writing skills and a perfectionist’s eye for detail, and will be skilled in many of the following areas and willing to learn the rest: content management systems and HTML (WordPress), Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office, MailChimp, Google Workspace, and Google Analytics. Excellent organizational and time management skills are essential. Interest in the design disciplines and academic publishing is desirable but not obligatory. The person we want is a quick study, a passionate reader, and a nimble collaborative thinker.

This is a full-time staff position with competitive benefits; compensation will be in the range of $75,000 to $85,000, or commensurate with experience. You will work from home but participate in weekly in-person meetings in San Francisco with a small and collegial team.

Places is committed to diversity and welcomes people from all backgrounds to apply.
