Places Journal Is Hiring: Audience Engagement Editor

Places Journal is seeking an Audience Engagement Editor who will play a key role in shaping and expanding the public presence of the journal, and in maintaining and strengthening our engagement with readers, authors, project collaborators, institutional partners, and other supporters.

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of internet culture and social media and a keen interest in digital publishing and public scholarship. The position bridges communications and editorial responsibilities and requires superb writing skills and high digital literacy combined with an analytical approach and a perfectionist’s eye for detail. Reporting to the Editor/Executive Director, the Audience Engagement Editor will:

• Craft and manage the journal’s communications strategies through research, analysis, and planning.
• Build readership via targeted email campaigns, social media, web advertising, and monthly and special newsletters.
• Manage our social media channels, especially Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
• Track readership analytics and monitor social media performance.
• Program and manage online and in-person events centered around journal themes, articles, and authors.
• Develop and manage collaborative projects with our academic partners and related institutions.
• Maintain and write frequent posts for our Places Wire and Places News channels.
• Curate the Reading Lists channel, including soliciting and publishing contributions from faculty in our academic partner community.
• Participate in board meetings, including reporting on communications and readership.
• In collaboration with the editors and board leadership, provide communications and program support for annual fundraising campaigns.
• In collaboration with the editors, board members, and host institutions, organize and help program semi-annual board meetings.

The Audience Engagement Editor will be a self-motivated professional with proven strengths in strategic communications and editorial thinking. They will benefit from three to five years experience in online publishing, academic environments, social media management, and web analytics. Excellent organizational and time management skills are essential, as is experience with content management systems and HTML (WordPress) and high proficiency in various office, publishing, and marketing tools, including Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop), Microsoft Office (Excel, Word), MailChimp, and Google Workspace and Google Analytics. Interest in the design disciplines and nonprofit and academic publishing is desirable.

This is a full-time staff position with benefits; the salary range is $55,000 to $65,000, depending on experience. We work from home on a regular weekly schedule, and participate in weekly in-person meetings in San Francisco (depending on pandemic restrictions); this is a Bay Area job. Places Journal is committed to diversity and welcomes people from all backgrounds to apply.
