Sonja Dümpelmann Receives ASLA’s Bradford Williams Medal
Thoughtful, critical writing about landscape is always valuable, which is why we’re thrilled to report that landscape historian Sonja Dümpelmann has been awarded the 2023 Bradford Williams Medal for her essay “Let All Be Educated Alike Up to a Certain Point,” published in Places last year.
The medal, awarded by the Editorial Advisory Committee of Landscape Architecture Magazine and presented by the American Society of Landscape Architects, “recognizes exemplary works of writing about landscape.” Meticulously researched and carefully written, Dümpelmann’s essay fits the bill, using archival texts and images to examine the philosophical and pedagogical influences of Frederick Law Olmsted and Booker T. Washington on the field of landscape architecture.
“Working with the Places editorial team has been a wonderful experience — always aiming for perfection and fun!” Dümpelmann shared. “They invariably improve the work, and this article would not be what it is without the editorial expertise of Frances Richard.”
Congratulations to Sonja on her achievement!
